Following the very positive General Council meeting, Chairman Geoff has now posted a "Stop Press" with actual details of the very large number of members remaining loyal by not cancelling their Direct Debits and Cathy Rawson has conducted a Scorers' Opinion Poll which also shows overwhelming support for continuing with an independent self-governing Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers. I'm greatly heartened by the news that subscription revenue from Direct Debits has increased by more than 50% - so much for those prophets of doom who were predicting a mass exodus.
I also understand that ACU&S has taken on almost twice as many members as ECB OA in the past year. Perhaps people are coming to realise that an existing organisation, albeit slightly tarnished from recent events, offers much better training prospects than ECB OA. Interested to hear Chris Kelly bemoan the fact that ECB OA have got very few decent instructors.
What is true, however, is that more people need to become actively involved in ACU&S. Postal ballots for officers rarely attract votes from more than 20% of the membership. If you don't get involved, don't criticise those few who have been ready to give up their time and effort.
