This missed me, as I was trying to replace a fallen chimney breast in the loft (professionally!) and our flat was in chaos.
Tony had been kind enough to encourage me to put an article in "How's That?" regarding the subject of "walking". It seemed Barrie King had seen the article on my Club's website, and thought it needed a bigger audience. Whilst Tony was associated with "How's That?", the editorial management was excellent. When he was fooled by Barrie, as so many have been and will be, it was Tony's undoubted mastery of the language that made the whole plan seem eminently plausible. Of course, it wasn't, and Tony must have had a gradually increasing "sinking" feeling as the whole escapade ran headlong into the buffers.
Yes, ICUS will miss him badly - in many ways, he WAS the mouthpiece of ICUS, frantically trying to create a beautiful silk purse from a smelly old sow's ear. It shames his memory that the only umpiring reference in the Guardian's obituary for him is that he "became an umpire, working with the Institute of Cricket Umpire and Scorers". Rather like saying that Captain Smith's contribution to transatlantic voyages was as Master of the "Titanic".
