I am only coming back from a 15 year retirement as an umpire. Last weekend I had to make 2 decisions for a run-out at the bowlers end, I went with not out both times, but had a niggling suspicion I was wrong both times.
I seem to remember that a senior umpire many years ago say to me,"look at the bat and listen for the ball on the stumps"
On the weekend I didn't seem to focus on anything bec I was trying hard to see everything.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When judging a run out I always focus on the crease, waiting for the bat to come into my direct line of vision, and keep the stumps in my peripheral vision. I don't just listen for the ball on the wicket in case the wicket isn't put down legally.
It's very difficult to watch two things at the same time though, so each to his own!
