In a recent T20, a free hit was called and that delivery smashed through the striker's stumps and to the amazement of striker, keeper and umpire, the ball continued to the boundary.
The ECBACO Premier Grade umpire called "Dead Ball" - surely that was wrong?

On the face of it, yes, does seem wrong. One would have expected 4 Byes to have been signalled. That said there may have been a special regulation regarding the match and this situation, although I find that hard to believe. Did anything else happen on the delivery, did the ball hit anything before reaching the boundary?

The fact that this was a free hit does not seem to make any difference (subject to tournament playing regulations). Is it any different to a player being otherwise bowled off a no ball? The batsmen are entitled to run if the ball ricochets off the stumps; and should the ball cross the boundary four runs would be scored.

Surely that's 4 byes - just like being bowled off a no-ball, as already stated.
