What does everyone else think about the recent situations?
Does a third umpire really help the on field decisions?

I have always thought that any referral system ruins the spirit of the game and undermines that fundamental principal "the umpires decision is final".
Cricket is a human game with human foibles. It's the human aspect that has made the game what it is. Introducing technology ruins this human face of the game. Mistakes, bad calls, etc always tend to even out over the course of a game anyway.
It won't be long before the TV replay rules the game at the top level for all decisions.
Video and replay equipment and software is becoming ever cheaper and it won't be long before it starts to creep into the league game. In fact I'm surprised that it hasn't already happened. It will happen. Some bright spark at a club will set a system up "just for fun", then a close bad LBW decision will be seen and the umpires will never hear the last of it. Next thing you know it's up in front of the league committee with a request to introduce it to all Premier league games..... and so it goes on.

I tend to agree with avatar - out or not out in many cases is defined by "the opinion of the umpire". Where do the Laws require every decision to be established as proven fact, beyond all doubt, nailed down as certainty?
However, that ship has clearly sailed, and it is indeed inevitable that it won't be long before wealthier league clubs invest in some form of technology in the name of "levelling the playing field". Leagues that currently struggle to provide a full complement of umpires for a season are likely to be less than impressed when called upon to provide three for some games. And clubs without the necessary resources will complain of unfair advantage, leagues will come under pressure to provide funding, inevitably there will be technical issues (where's the volume knob?), problems with maintenance, and possibly more arguments and bad feeling than was ever generated by the occasional disputed LBW or a dubious bat-pad catch. It's not a pretty picture, and ultimately, is anyone going to enjoy the game significantly more? Perhaps I'm wrong, but I am sceptical.
