There appears to be a contradiction within Tom Smith. Under Law 39.3, Stumped, the Law says that "The striker shall not be run out if he is out of his ground, not attempting a run...........if No ball has been called". I infer that the striker can be run out off a No ball if he does attempt a run, and this appears to be confirmed on page 244: "If the striker starts to run and the wicket-keeper puts the wicket down, the dismissal is Run out" (I appreciate that it doesn't specifically talk about this in the context of a No ball). However, under Law 38 Run out, on page 241, Tom Smith says: "When a No ball has been delivered a run out can only be affected by: a fielder or combination of fielders; a fielder/wicket-keeper combination; but never by a wicket-keeper acting entirely on his own." This implies that if a No ball is bowled and the striker decides to run at any time, the wicket-keeper would have to pass the ball to another fielder to effect a run out. Surely that can't be right; or can it?

I regret to say that this is one of several mistakes in the JTS edition.
It has been clarified elsewhere that the wicket keeper can act unilaterally if the striker attempts a run. Page 241 is wrong and 244 is right.

Colin, you say that this is one of several mistakes. Do you know, and can you tell us what the other mistakes are? Alternatively it would keep this board very busy in the cold wet winter months if we had to find them all.........

Sheila Hill did circulate some 21 pages a few years ago to some ACU&S instructors!
It was considered too indigestible to make it generally available.
It is hoped a new edition of Tom Smith will be available in Autumn 2010.

My first reaction to that is what is the point of a book (that is recognised as the 'umpires bible') if it needs 21 pages of revisions! That also means that we are doing 21 things wrong if we check Tom Smith for guidance. Are these 21 pages still available? I am not impressed. though who I am not impressed with, I am not sure........!!

Yes I'd be interested in seeing a copy of it too Colin. I seem to have had an e-mail 3 years ago about being able to contact her, and send her a CD, to get a copy, but never got around to it. Do you have a copy that could be e-mailed or posted online?
