Hello everyone, I wondered if anyone here could help, I'm doing a design project on umpire light meters and wondered if someone could please tell me what the light level reading is (in Lux of FC) when the light is offered to the batsmen? Also wondered if any of you use light meters and if so, your thoughts about them. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Many Thanks.

There isn't one! The purpose of taking a light reading is for the umpire(s) to know, at a later time, whether or not the light has got better or worse. Law 3.9 deals with the circumstances that can cause play to be suspended (or resumed). In particular look at Law 3.9(c). The umpires take a reading when a decision has been made about the suitability of the light. A meter reading can be taken at that time. If subsequently they need to judge whether the light has changed - for better or worse - the meter reading will give a guide and help them make a decision. Thre can be no absolute value for unsuitability since the light conditions will vary from ground to ground and according to the background. (An empty ground full of white painted seats will reflect far more light than one full of spectatators in dark coats!) At best a meter can only tell you whether things seem to have got better, worse or stayed the same.
