I feel sorry for the other umpire; having to umpire both ends is bad enough at any time, but doing so during a Minor Counties game (a heated one at that) is surely 'fun'!

Hmmmm, I admit to being a bit surprised by your comment, at first. Not the angle I expected, but you are right, of course. I imagine a Minor Counties umpire would have encountered a bit of criticism in his career, but it must have been really severe to make him abandon his post like that.
It would be nice to know what the other umpire, Cliff Poc ock, thought of the whole thing. (sorry for the space in the name, but it seems the censorship on this board is turned up a little too high. "Pothingy" is not the man's name!)

Well I mean it does seem a little odd to simply walk out of a game, but like I said I think it reflects badly on his attitude to his colleague. If I was umpiring and my colleague walked out, I'd be rather miffed.
It seems a little odd for an umpire at that level to expect an apology, and if he doesn't get one, he simply leaves. Obviously players shouldn't be insulting umpires, but similarly umpires shouldn't simply walk off.

That is terrible. The umpires are supposed to work as a team, and help each other out and support each other. One umpire leaving the other in the lurch is not appropriate behaviour.
Codes of Conduct and Match Referees are in place to deal with these sorts of incidents and if an umpire can't restrain himself enough to wait and use those facilities, maybe he is at the wrong level and in the wrong place.

We all have our breaking points. However, at the end of the day, it's just a game. Nobody died.

The press in this instant did not report the whole story.
The umpire reported the bad behaviour (swearing X2) by the captain to his Manager at the next interval. He did his job. It was here that this official tried to threaten and intimidate the umpire -contrary to the laws of the game. This threatening and intimidating attack was improper. Therefore Two people were reported for bring the game into disrepute- the Captain and the Official.Apparently the officials behaviour was more severe than the on field incident.
The other umpire although not privy to the abuse dished out to his collegue by the off field official did not consider supporting his stance and tried to persuade his collegue to carry on inorder to avoid any further friction.
The opening line of the official report of the incident to the gov'ning body stated " That the umpire in question does not consider a player swearing at an umpire on the field of play warranted sufficient reason to leave the game".
Apparently due to the confidentiality clause in the Umpires contracts( No speaking with the press etc) only one side ever became public. The weak stance from MCCA on the day for reasons unknown failed to speak with the umpire first hand -and had to rely on third party spin. Suspending him from standing in his next game (although the two counties involved had expressed their wish for him to stand). The shallow management became apparent as the heirarcy of MCCA allegedly allowed the official at the center of the umpires report to stay in committee whilst the issue was being debated! The umpire reported both Captain & Manager for Level11 breaches. The Captain received a two match ban and the publicity. The manager wrote an apology to the committee.
If umpires do not have the backing of the Officials, management and players it wont be too long before the ECB copy the FA in producing a CD titled "Respect" and handed to all players officials and spectators inorder to redress the slide in standards.
As Geof Boycott said "We're starting to play this marvelous game for reasons other than cricketing ones". Will the first symptom will be the demise of the officials or the umpire...
There has already been instances of hand to hand fighting on the field during a premier league match and what has become regular shameful remarks quoted in the local press by a captain or manager of various awful decisions by the umpires as though this provides enough excuse for a loss.
Where are umpires going with this game?
Shorely not the same way as Sunday morning Refs ....PLEASE But first get all the facts.
