The newsletter asks If (& when) the umpires should inform the scorers that they have made a mistake.
My thought is that as the laws state, the Umpires are responsible for the correctness of the scores, Yes, we should check any discrepancies. In practical terms that will be if the scorboard is wrong (only 5 runs (or 7) added, when a boundary "6" is scored & signalled) on most older scoreboards, rotating panels/ slats, may stick, be broken/ missing a number, number(s) may not drop everytime when cord is pulled. A shout to the scorers will usually get the board corrected if it can be (i.e. not missling slats). If not, it might need a trip to the scorers to check scores. If there is a problem, the game may need halting to get score right. If the scorebooks do not tally, the one that tallies with the umpires scorecard(s) should be consulted (maybe a wide ball or "No Ball" has been missed by one scorer (even though they both acknowleged it at the time). BUT, the score must be correct during game, whenever possible, it is no good the scoreboard showing "5" to win & a boundary 4 hit (scores level- match tied) only to find on leaving the field "6" was needed & the batting side had actually lost the game, needing a boundary "6" for a tie.
