This was indeed very sad news.
We do teach umpires to go to the side the ball is struck because this gives a better view of the action at the wicket. You should also be looking at the crease for short runs as well as the run out.
I do strongly suggest that you also watch the faces of the bowler/fielder as these will give a good indication of where the ball is aimed.
This is the first time I have heard of a death from a throw, although I do have vague memories of one directly off the bat.
There was also one where an aggrieved player used a stump to assault the umpire about ten years ago.
Fortunately, these are very few and far between. More accidents happen when travelling to and from the ground.
Should we all wear a black armband on Saturday 11th July? I have posed this question to ECBACO Board meeting on 7th July.

I think a black armband this coming Saturday is an excellent idea. I have asked my local ACO secretary to spread the word in Sussex. I'd be astonished if the ECBACO Board dismissed it.

With all due respect to Mr. Jenkins, I shall not be donning the armband. Whilst I think it might be appropriate for umpires in the South Wales league (where, presumably, the majority of players will realise for whom they are being worn) to do so, I think that extending it further is just modern mawkishness. Should we all go and litter the ground with 'bouquets' from Asda, too?
I shall pause before play to think of a man who, I presume, died happy in his 'work'.

I won't get an armband as I am not in his league but if I'm provided with one I will wear it. As much as I am sorry for the man, I didn't know him so I don't see the relevance beyond a few thoughts or prayers, as anotouter suggests.

You must do as you think fit. Sussex ACO, however, have requested that all members officiating this Saturday wear a black armband as a mark of respect.
I think black armbands are usually manufactured from electrical tape, gaffer tape etc.

We have had no instructions yet from our ACO but I will wear one out of respect. There but for the grace of god go I.
Standind at the bowlers end I had a ball hit hard of the bat that took my hat off. That was too close.

I have had responses from:
K says "No. Were we to do so, we would wear them for every match; surely somewhere, an umpire dies every day, in a whole variety of circumstances!"
R says "Yes: I think that would be an appropriate gesture" D says "Yes: It's a nice idea and I'm sure would be appreciated" M simply says "yes"
J says: "It's a nice thought, but I suspect pentration levels of membership among major leauge umpires is now a little dilute. I suspect we may need to prepare for action against health and safety regulation for us, making protective helmets mandatory etc !"
