probably an easy question this
batsman cross making first run, throw comes in and crosses the boundry for four . what is the signal to the scorer .
how do i signal the five runs in total ? do i signal a four in the normal manor and the scorers will add the 1 run or do i go over and say its 5 runs

Well there's no official signal as such.
I would signal the four first, then hold hand out in a bye like signal, and touch each finger in turn. (I also have advantage of using walkie-talkies, so in can use those if needs be.)
If scorers are sitting within audible distance can just shout "Five" to them.

It's even more fun when they've scored seven.

As mentioned by Wisden there is no official signal that the Umpire can use. However, I would only signal a boundary and then when the scores are changed on the score board I would check if the 5 runs are considered or not. If not then I would communicate with the scorers to include the "run" taken. Also, if you have a situation where scores are changed only at the end of the over, I would write it down in my pad and check with the scorers at the end of the over if 5 runs are scored in the SB.

I simply hold up a hand (or two) with the appropriate number of fingers displayed. I make sure that the scorers acknowledge (verbally if at all possible), note the runs and check at the next break.
I don't bother signalling the four, just the total runs scored + bye if necessary.

If the ball reaches the boundary, you certainly need to signal boundary 4. You should also inform the scorers of the number of runs totally scored.

Sir,
After signalling boundary to the scorer, the umpire is required to signal 5 runs by opening his palm of one hand in front of his chest, and by closing and opening his palm with fingers, to indicate to the scorer that 5 runs to be scored.
It is also to be noted in your notes and should confirm later with the scorers at the next possible meeting.
Hope I have guided properly.

The umpire is not required to do anything other than signal boundary 4. It may be helpful to give an unofficial signal too, provided it isn't ambiguous. If 6 or 7 is scored overall you need to be very careful.
I agree that this should be confirmed with the scorers as soon as practicable though.
