I have yet to stand in a league game this season even though it's two weeks old. The first weekend about 1/3 of all games were unplayable due to waterlogged ground. The Saturday just gone only ONE game was off in all nine divisions due to waterlogged ground; guess who was one of the nominated umpires? I think it's down to the influence of the ECB Gods because I've been complaining so much about the current ACO farce

It must be great for the players in your league to have umpires at every game. If that isn't the case, then surely a phone call to your appointments secretary would have resulted in your having a match to take charge of. When did you find out the game was off because of the waterlogged ground, it must have been in plenty of time. In Derbyshire, we umpires have to be informed not less than 2 hours before the scheduled start, which would enable us to contact the sec for another fixture.

Our panel is only responsible for covering Divisions 1 to 3 (out of 9). The first week I rang the sec and there was only one D3 game that needed cover and that was a long drive for me so I passed. Last Saturday I didn't even bother ringing as there were other things that I needed the time to do and I had a game on Sunday as well. It was just the irony of the situation that prompted me to post.

In North Stafordshire, the umpires have to attend whatever the weather or state of the ground and stay there for 90 minutes even if there is no hope of improvement.
This regulation was imposed after one Saturday when a game was called off with a damp pitch and everyone went to watch Stoke City FC! The League Chairman arrived at 5pm to find the ground had dried out completely.
