I think moving away from the established policy of appointing neutral umpires would be a totally retrograde step. I also reject the crazy notion that the best umpires are Australian. In whose judgment, exactly? The Australian press? My personal favourite is an Australian, Simon Taufel. My second and third, however, are Aleem Dar and Steve Bucknor.
I think this whole business is just part of the pre-Ashes battle for psychological supremacy.

Simon is the best but I cant really see Darrel Hair standing in an Ashes Test!! As for Daryl Harper well his contract wont be renewed by the ICC. He's hardly been used by them.

Well, there you are then. No Aussie umpires left!

All umpires are neutral by definition.

As for Daryl Harper well his contract wont be renewed by the ICC. He's hardly been used by them. Well in 2006 he has umpired in 5 Test Matches, compared to Taufel and Hair who have both umpired 8. And umpired in 9 ODIs compared to Taufel's 11 and Hair's 7. I would be surprised if the ICC didn't renew his contract, but who knows?
