A celebration of the feat of a Cricket Scorer! – Gael Howard of White Rock BC.
From the VANCOUVER CRICKET UMPIRES & SCORERS ASSOCIATION (VCU&SA)VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
We wish to celebrate & publicize the continuing career of one of our members who has scored in approximately 1040 scoring assignments for the BRITISH COLUMBIA MAINLAND CRICKET LEAGUE (BCMCL). This included MCC visits & Inter-provincial tournaments.
GAEL HOWARD learned to score at home in England while watching test matches on TV using only the Radio commentary. She began scoring at Cricket Games in 1951 when she was 13 years old, while playing for BABINGTON HOUSE School at Eltham, London, England. When she studied to become a qualified nurse, she continued scoring for her nursing school at Middlesex Hospital in 1960.
In 1962, she immigrated to Canada with her husband – Dr. Terence Howard. She supported the local club they joined in Vancouver - the Kerrisdale Cricket Club, where she was the scorer.
In 1967 the RICHMOND CRICKET CLUB was formed. The founding members –Ivor Dunham, Peter Mason, Martin Gresham and Terry Howard began playing for Richmond CC in the BCMCL. Gael was the scorer at the inaugural match on 29th April, 1967. She has, on 4th June, 2016 completed the amazing feat of scoring 1000 matches for the Richmond Cricket Club. Gael was also a member of the former international group of umpires & scorers – the ACU&S.
