Do any Clubs / Leagues use walkie talkies to help Umpires & scorers communicate easier. I have tried using it this season with success and has met with approval of Umpires. The only problem I have found is occasional interference. Can anyone advise on a walkie talkie to use which will overcome this problem.

My colleague on Saturday used one. It was helpful when we wanted to know how many balls to go and not have to shout through glass 50yds away! Also we had 4 overthrows when the batsmen hadn't quite crossed so that needed to be communicated too.
I liked the idea and hope it comes in more in our league. I sadly have no idea what the best brand of walkie talkie is!

Personally I've not had problems indicating to scorers whether there were 4 or 5 runs when there have been overthrows by using the fingers on my hand.

The only time I can imagine an umpire needing to use a W-T, I would think, no, hope that the ball is dead, so distracting the players would not be an issue jaybee. I look forward to doing an assessment on an umpire who elected to use one.

Worked the scoreboard for a 2nd XI trophy game today and the Umpires asked for a walkie talkie link to the scoreboard, the scorers seemed to acknowledge this is becoming a regular request and very helpiul. Unfortunately had already given this link to an announcer. During the game there were several incidents where a link to an Umpire would have proved very useful.

I quite like the idea because I want to get a set of walkie talkies for umpiring hockey. would be useful in cricket too.

In Ireland we use the Motorola XTB446, although not sure if it is still available. Try drcs.co.uk
The radios are very useful when there is a third umpire - for example for checking players going on and off the field, catering arrangements/drinks, requesting balls, whether the fielding side is behind their available time etc. etc. We don't use them too much for regular matches with just two umpires, but even then they are useful if there is a possibility of a miscount!

We use walkie talkies for the the Army representative teams when player at Aldershot and they are a god-send. My reason for for being such a strong advocate of the two way radio (Walkie Talkie) is the teams are have different personnel on a daily basis due to work effecting players availability. If we did not have that means of communication, the game would probably turn into a pantomime with shouts between the scorebox and the umpires. When scoring with TCS this means of communication prevents spending time trying to reverse and over accredited to the wrong bowler.

In my league, the league sold walkie-talkies in order to promote the idea of using them between Scorers and Umpires. Myself as a scorer think they are a brilliant way when they are used well. If my colleague and I are unsure about something, we can ask straight away in order to avoid any further mistakes. The umpires in my league love them too! The only con is the odd interference you occur when using them, however, in all of last season when I used them, I only ever encounted one little interference throughout the full season. So not that bad eh?
