While I appreciate and use traditional methods of ball and run counting (e.g. clicker, lever counter), I find that the "Ultimate Umpire" application for iphone / itouch is an excellent aid. I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it allows umpires to keep score easily while also counting balls / overs / wickets. I'd recommend it if you have an iphone and are not averse to using technology on the wicket!

i assume that this means the phone is on all the time during the match. What do you do if someone wishing to contact you rings you as the bowler starts his long run up to deliver the ball. I won't risk being called whilst umpiring, and turn my phone off leaving it locked in the umpires' changing room.

Gooders - it is possible to put phone on "do not disturb" (or possibly silent)
Michael - I have tried the App but it has the major drawback that it distracts you from your main job. You need to look carefully at the screen AFTER each ball - and some umpires try to do it whilst ball is in play. I find screen difficult to read in sunlight.
I found I needed the clicks to reassure me that I had pressed once, and once only, but this disturbed players.
PS I am neither a technophobe nor a geek - I have actually been in professional computer industry since 1963!

Acumen administrator - Having downloaded the app I can see some of the drawbacks, as you have pointed out. I think it is a very good app as a back up for the scorers and good app for the square leg umpire.
