You may recall this sad incident in Swansea on 4th July 2009. The inquest was held on 22nd April 2010 and a number of reports have appeared in the press - I have placed links at www.acumenbooks.co.uk/AlcwynJenkins.htm

A very sad, but thankfully rare event!
But what on earth is Mr Bird on when he says that umpires may have to wear helmets?! One umpire is killed by a freak accident that might happen only once in 50 years or more and suddenly we all must wear helmets? That's akin to saying everyone should wear a grounded Faraday Cage when outdoors in case they're struck by lightning!

In an attempt to reduce that risk, I tend to stand side-on when the ball is played out deep, then it doesn't take much to turn the head one way or the other to check on the trajectory of the ball, or the position of the bat for short runs, or possible run outs.
