Tuesdays - 3rd October 2006 to 5th December 2006
Examination date is still to be arranged, probably 12th December
The course will cover GL6 (the old Part 1) and GL5 (old Part II)
Specification for GL6 & GL5 Examinations of the ACUS are as follows:
• Examinations will refer only to one day cricket
• There will be no “weights & measures” questions; e.g. how much does a ball weigh or how long is a bat?
• There will be no calculation of overs remaining in last hour
• Questions will be based on Laws of Cricket 2000 code, 2003 edition and the Jubilee edition of Tom Smith’s “Cricket Umpiring & Scoring”
• Some questions will test more than one piece of knowledge
• GL6 will focus on knowledge of Laws
(60 questions)
• GL5 will focus on knowledge and application of Laws (70 questions)
• For each question a picture/diagram will be accompanied by a short scenario. This will be followed by a question and between 2 and 5 multiple choice options
• Pass mark at both levels will be 80%
An outline of the lecture programme is attached.
Although the lectures cover both courses and all the Laws of cricket the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (ACU&S) regulations currently mean you have to sit the more basic GL6 examination and then have one year’s on field experience before sitting the GL5 so those new students will take GL6 if they wish, those returning may be wanting to take GL5.
The course will take place at Oxford Brookes University, Gibbs Building, Gypsy Lane, Oxford starting at 7:00 pm each evening and lasting about two hours. The room we’ll be in can vary from week to week depending on what other University lectures are going on but we usually met up in the foyer area.
Limited parking is available on site. Gibbs Building is on the road leading up from the “Out” gate onto Gypsy Lane. To reach it turn into the University entrance off Gypsy Lane and immediately left to drive across between the main building and the railings past the bus stop. Turn right at the “Out” road barrier and drive up the slight hill and try to find a parking space. Gibbs Building is the one facing you from the first small parking area.
The cost of the course will be £30 to cover costs and examination fees but money will be reimbursed should there be any “left overs” as we do not run the courses at a profit.
You will however need to purchase a copy of Tom Smith’s New Cricket Umpiring and Scoring, (ISBN 0-297-84724-4) the Jubilee edition which the course is based on. This can be purchased from any decent bookshop or Online from Amazon Books where I believe it is cheaper.
Although hand outs will be provided covering the basics this is essential reading if you want to pass the examination. (Hand outs will be sent by Email but we will bring copies for those who do not have this facility)
If you wish to sit the examinations then you will have to join the ACU&S nationally at a cost of £20 and we will need a membership number to be able to enter you for the examinations.
Membership forms will be available at the course, those on Email can download a copy from the ACUS website – www.acus.org.uk
There is also a charge for the examination from ACU&S which we believe will be £10 and a £2 “Training levy” which goes towards the regional training budget but this will be taken from the course fee.
Those of you wishing to get on field experience in the 2007 season will also have to complete a Criminal Record Bureau enhanced disclosure form as ACU&S and ECB will not appoint umpires to any game without such clearance. Again these forms and further explanation will be available at the course.
Please could you let me know as soon as possible if you wish to join the course this October.
Yours sincerely,
Ian Royle, Hon Secretary, Oxfordshire CU&SA
