ACO Training & Education
The following notice is served in answer to a number of requests which have been received recently. This notice confirms the information shared with the nominated ACO representatives at Edgbaston on 22nd April and will be available on the ECB ACO website immediately.
With the consent of the County Board, these courses can be run nominated trainers within each County Board and be delivered in Autumn and Winter 2008.
ECB Umpire Level 1
This course has been written to enable potential umpire’s easy access to umpiring cricket matches. The course should be offered by County Board ACO’s to enable a significant number of new participants to be recruited as an umpire.
The objective of this course is to teach the rudiments of the Laws of cricket. The benefit of this course is that it will help all abilities to have the confidence to be able to stand as an umpire in a cricket match. There is no prerequisite knowledge needed although any that is held will determine the pace at which the tutor will be able to move through the course content.
The candidates will be examined by members of their local association by use of an oral examination these assessors will be supplied with a series of photographs and / or video clips of cricket action and will hold a discussion with each of the candidates. The syllabus is attached and the ECB will supply the examination upon request.
Certificate of Competence
The Certificate of Competence is an interim measure to allow experienced members of County Board ACO’s to train and assess potential league and cup panel umpires for 2009 season. If deemed appropriate by the County Board ACO the course could be identical to or based upon a course that has been run previously.
The objective for participants on this course is to demonstrate they have a good understanding of the laws of the game. The objective for the trainers will be to bring each pupil to the level of officiating they see as appropriate for their county or league. Each county will be responsible for deciding the level of competence required and will be responsible for producing the syllabus and the examination.
The ECB will produce the certificates once each County ACO has informed ECB ACO membership services of each candidates name and contact details.
This course will not gain any other accreditation but will assist those officials who wish to progress towards participating in the ECB ACO Level 2 course in future.
Correspondence Scorers Course
These courses will be available to scorers who cannot attend a regular and formal training course on scoring. The ECB ACO are rolling out scorers correspondence courses world-wide. This allows the pupil the benefit of learning at their own pace in a relaxed environment whilst being confident that the support their tutor is always available.
These courses will be run for scorers who wish to enhance their skills and capabilities. The main objective of running these informative sessions is to demonstrate to all scorers the MCC Laws of Cricket and how these laws can be applied on to a score sheet.
Level 1 is intended to demonstrate the fundamental information needed for any scorer to progress. The two objectives that all students will need to achieve to gain a comprehensive understanding are the Laws of Cricket and how these laws affect the score sheet entries.
Level 2 will enable the student to develop their skills and knowledge further. The three key areas to improve on within level 2 are knowledge, technique and confidence. In order for development throughout Level 2 it is integral to the course that students are able to score any cricket match successfully whilst making use of the full box or linear style scoring methods.
Scorers courses will be available in June/July. Lynn Allen, ACO Interim Board, will be leading the distribution of courses.
