missingleg,
Thanks for the reply.
It's not a very helpful situation right now is it? We either have to produce evidence of ECB membership OR provide our own certificate of insurance before we're allowed to be allocated any fixtures!
I've just spoken to Tom at ECB and he says that most ACU&S members have been processed and letters sent out! Well I haven't received anything - he's going to check.
Very best of luck with your first season - if it's anything like mine it'll be a steep learning curve, a bit scary but very, very enjoyable! Let us know how it goes will you?
Pete

I'll just be happy when that membership card gets sent through the mail; if he says they've mostly been sent out then I'll wait a week before phoning in again.
Has anybody on here received his/hers yet?
Thanks for the words of encouragement; my main problem (in friendlies) is sometimes losing concentration and counting a no-ball/wide as one of the over before realising what I've just done!! I'll let you know - 26th April is the first fixture.

26th April - me too (hopefully)! The main thing to remember, IMHO, is not to get flustered. You will make mistakes - the classroom does not in any way prepare you for the real thing - just try and put the mistake behind you, learn from it and carry on. No balls and wides - in one of my first games the 6th ball of an over was a wide and I called it as such..... and then immediately called.... over!!! I realised immediately and took it back but I felt such a prat! We all had a chuckle about it at the end though. ATEOTD you're human, you may make one or two mistakes but most sides make at least eleven every game - if they didn't no-one would ever be out! Pete

Chris kelly has just emailed me back confirming that my GL4 will be recognised as ECB Level 2 so that's one less thing to worry about.

Hair pulling out time!
I have just spoken to ECB again and they're now saying that all ACU&S members "should" be on the ECB database by the middle of next week (12th March) but that paperwork and membership card issuing is dealt with by a different department and it could easily be a further month before anyone sees any paperwork!

Oh for goodness' sake!!
It's been a rocky introduction to umpiring for me that's for sure!

Hi, The thing to remember is that you are insured by being a member. So as long as you have confirmation then the membership card becomes secondary. The season is fast approaching so we should be getting ready for our first call of PLAY. I am going to have some practice in the nets over the next few weeks, have been extending my walking to get fit and have been taking part in some GL4/5 revision to get the brain cells going. Even though I have GL4 there is always something to learn. Remember my posting 27 Jan. Go out and enjoy it. Yes you will make mistakes, but you will learn from them and improve rapidly. Don't try to get too far too fast.

Latest news:
Hi Peter,
We are ploughing through all of the membership applications forms so you should have a letter next week.
We will then be sending out membership cards once all qualifications, payment details and CRB’s have been confirmed.
If ACU&S confirm you have passed GL4 you will transfer to ECB Umpire Level 2
Many thanks

John, thanks very much for the words of encouragement; I won't forget! TrueDub, I gathered that GL6 was Level 1 and GL5 and GL4 was level 2. I must be wrong too

No, I believe you are right. My level 2 was confirmed some while ago, well before I took the GL4 exam. See the FAQ on the ECB ACO website: ecb.co.uk/ecb/ecb-association-of-cricket-officials/ecb-officials-association-faqs%2C1276%2CBP.htmlIn particular, this bit: Q: If ECB has said umpires who have passed GL5 will be accorded Level 2 status, why bother with GL4 and assessment for QM status? A: The intention is to fulfil a commitment to members. Examinations can be an incentive to candidates, and achieving QM status will give personal satisfaction.

I hadn't realised that.
If I may say so, that is utter crap. GL4 is way beyond GL5 in terms of ability and level of knowledge and fieldcraft but now my efforts in reaching and passing GL4 will be noted by a disinterested observer no more highly than those of someone who has passed GL5 - in reality there is a world of difference but no-one will know.
I am incandescent with anger about this now!
I shall be writing to the ECB immediately.

I have emailed ECBCOA and await their reply.
I'm still fuming though. IMHO GL5 is not much of a step up from GL6, at least I didn't find it so, the exams were virtually identical in form and content. GL4 is a totally different level to either.
GL6 & GL5 should both be level 3 IMHO
Does no-one else feel the same?

I think what we need to know is what Level 2 within the ECB actaully is, it could be that the difference between Level 1 & 2 is very small, hence the reason for moving ACU&S members with GL5 upto L2, from what I understand there isn't a Level 3 qualification available, either way you can't please everyone, we would have this problem if GL5/6 were L1 and GL4 L2, GL5 members would be equally disgruntled. I agree that the stepup from GL6 to GL5 wasn't all that great, but from what I've been told the step to GL4 isn't much from GL5, but that is only opinion. If Level 2 is only based on the one day format then I agree with the ECB that GL5 members should be Level 2

ACU&S Examination Level------------------------------ECB OA Level GL6Umpire--------------------------------------------Umpire Level 1
GL5 & GL4--------------------------------------------Umpire Level 2 Introductory Scorer-----------------------------------Scorer Level 1 Standard Scorer--------------------------------------Scorer Level 2
Advanced Scorer--------------------------------------Scorer Level 3
This information has been on the ECB OA/ACO web site since 2005/6.
All those turkeys that voted for Christmas should have read the facts before voting. Now a rookie is classed as competent as a qualified ACU member with over 20 years experience. I agree this is ridiculous, I voted against ECB ACO but not for this reason. You may have thought ACUS could not organize a party in a pub? ECB ACO appear to be 100 x worse.
