My Regional Counsellor tells me that ECB had a target of 1,500 members by 31dec06 but that they only got just over 900 members. In fact they have only about 100 matches to which they appoint officials directly so they already have 800 dissappointed members..

According to the document linked to above:
I've just had a look at what this means, and the numbers I've come up with are:
County 2nd XI matches 35 in 2006
Development of Excellence matches Say 25 in 2006
MCC Universities competitions 18 in 2006
all rounds of the C0ckspur Cup 396 matches in 2007
I presume these matches will not be allocated just to ECB OA members.

I couldn't resist pointing out that each match requires two umpires, not just one, so your arithmetic is actually sadly wanting.

Why do you "presume" that these fixtures will be offered to people other than those in the ECBOA. Surely that is the point of having the ECBOA i.e. for the ECB to rule over all umpires and hand out the "plumb ties" to their own members.
Or have I missed something recently!
p.s. I now have no axe to grind as I have retired from umpiring after 34 years of service, although I probably could have had another 20/30 years in me, I don't care any more. It's just a game, boys and girls. I just think that it is very sad the way umpires associations seem to have just collapsed in a huge heap and I am afraid that I must now let all members of any organisation that they care to be in just get on and fight amongst themselves. Happy Umpiring!
Tom Smith must be spinning in his grave. Very sad indeed.

The invitation to apply for C0ckspur Cup appointments was sent in a letter to local ACU&S branches, so I'm actually fairly sure that they're not exclusively going to ECB OA members, at least for the time being. My local branch doesn't currently show any signs of collapse, and I don't think there's any imminent danger of it. It's sad to think that perfectly sound umpires feel they're being driven away. I wish you well.
