David Byas has been appointed as an "umpire coach" for 2007. Yes, the David Byas who has never umpired a game in his life. Ah, but David has been a first class cricketer and so therefore is a member of that exclusive club and can therefore walk straight in to a top umpiring job.
This is all that is wrong with cricket umpiring. What is the point of all of us doing exams, having years of practice, yearning for games at a higher level etc? All you need to do is to have played a game or two at the highest level and this seems to be far, far better than years of on-field experience. The first class list is full of them.
We're wasting our time guys. It's a closed shop. Always has been and always will. Doesn't matter what exam certificates we have or what colour tie we are allowed to wear.
Absolute farce.
I had a headache once. I fancy being a brain surgeon. Absolutely ludicrous but it's the same difference.
