The thought struck me yesterday that shortly we will be reaching the time when older players are thinking of retiring as players and would be most welcome as new umpires. Even though we will not be starting our level one courses until January next year, it has got to be easier to contact future umpires during the season whilst they are still more accessible. With that in mind, I have contacted our county training officer with my thoughts, and he has asked the league secretary if he could contact all club secretaries with the suggestion about our future umpires. Most clubs will have players reaching the end of their playing days, plus parents of juniors who might be interested in taking a more active part as umpires or scorers. It may be that it has no effect, but if it means that there are 4 extra candidates at each of our four training venues, then that would increase our ranks by 16. If that were repeated in all other counties, we would, before too long, have umpires to cover most if not all league matches played.
Here's hoping........................ John

In Berkshire we have just started our annual promotional campaign. This does take a lot of work but we are seeing our efforts being awarded by a steady increase in membership.
We advertise our course widely including sports centres, the press. We write to multiple contacts in every club, every official on the ECB database within the county. Every forum, every league website & even use Twitter.

Is anyone having any success with Level 1a? In Derbyshire demand is so poor the we're not even running one this time.

Bucks ACO will be holding a two day Level 1 Scoring Course on 19th and 26th January 2014 at High Wycombe Cricket Club. The Level 1 Scoring Course is designed to teach new scorers how to score, as well as to improve the knowledge and confidence of people already scoring. It is also the perfect opportunity to ask any questions you may have about scoring with two experienced practising scorers, with an assessment on the second day. We advertise our course widely including sports centres, the press. We write to multiple contacts in every club, every official on the ECB database within the county. Every forum, every league website & even use Twitter. This has proved successful this year and our courses are proving popular in that we are having to run extra. Also we started an initiative to encourage candidates to join us and ACO and this has had a surprisingly high hit rate.

Is anyone having any success with Level 1a? In Derbyshire demand is so poor the we're not even running one this time. Quite the opposite. We have been running a Supported Development Programme which leads onto L1A for several years. Very popular ans successful. So much so that one of our leagues has recognised the value and is stating that L1A is to be the benchmark for umpires in their top division. More work for us
